Hiking Group Pretoria

Hiking

#kultuurAvontuurkamp caters for all fitness levels and age groups to create a safe, affordable hiking environment in Gauteng and around Pretoria for one-day or weekend hiking adventures. #kultuurAvontuurkamp STAPGROEP has NO Club fees. Instead we have a "you-partake-you-contribute-policy". R50 of your R150 (per hike) payment goes to Club Development i.e. identifying new routes, walking them in advance to make sure they are safe (thus you are safe) and giving feedback prior to the said HIKE (and the expenses that goes with this exercise) + Updating this page (and hosting fees for website). Routes vary between R40 - R90 (R50 average) per hike, and the balance R50 for catering expenses after each hike - so that hikers can become friends. We hike because hiking offers a group of elements we need for a happy and healthy lifestyle. It is an activity with adventure, exploring, challenges, nature, fitness and with #kultuurAvontuurkamp STAPGROEP, comfort and relaxation is an important factor.

We offer Thursday hikes, Weekend hikes, adventure and leisure hikes, base camp and backpacking weekends, club evenings, and social events.

Be sure to answer all the questions or your request will be denied.

Remember to:

  •          Wear a mask.

  •          Wash your hands, carry a hand sanitizer when hiking.

  •          Walk a safe distance (1.5m) from your fellow hikers.

Etiquette

Because hikers may come into conflict with other users of the land or may harm the natural environment, hiking etiquette has developed.

  • When two groups of hikers meet on a steep trail, a custom has developed in some areas whereby the group moving uphill has the right-of-way.

  • Various organizations recommend that hikers generally avoid making loud sounds, such as shouting or loud conversation, playing music, or the use of mobile phones. Tis applies to shouting and general noise making as well. If you want to listen to music, please wear your headphones. Firstly, we do not all share the same taste in music. Secondly, loud music and shouting chases away the bird and wildlife on the trails. This is their home, not yours.

  • The LEAVE NO TRACE movement offers a set of guidelines for low-impact hiking: "Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but photos. Kill nothing but time. Keep nothing but memories". Take home and dispose of whatever you brought in with you. Apple cotes, banana, orange and naartjie peels are also not to be thrown on the trails. although they are biodegradable, you are dispersing seeds into an environment that they were not meant to be in.

  • Hikers are advised not to feed wild animals, because they will become a danger to other hikers if they become habituated to human food, and may have to be killed, or relocated.

  • Do not remove any plants or wildlife. This is a no brainer guys. Leave the trails exactly the way you found them.

  • No defacing of trees, rocks or any property along the trails. While you may think it is cute to carve your name into a tree or scratch it onto a cliff face, you are defacing Mother Nature's natural beauty that we all have to enjoy.

  • BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. If you see litter on the trails, please pick it up. If you are worried about Covid, pack a pair of gloves or a second plastic bag. One bag to pick up the litter and the other to dispose of it into.

Danielsrust Game Farm 10km

26 February 2022

...and  Braai

The farm landscape is a variation of open grasslands and small forested thickets, we even have a fresh water stream. The terrain provides for great walking and trail running and an opportunity to spot some plains game.

1000 hectare game farm situated in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. It is typical Savannah grassland with about 700 head of plains game.

Kilometres of walking, cycling and running trails available, both graded roads and single track paths.

We are currently the 5th and 6th generation living on the farm.

We also have the last remaining portion of the original farm which apparently stretched from the little river along the tar road until halfway to Broederstroom.

Danielsrust was originally settled by Daniel Jacobus Oosthuizen (26/7/1821 – 6/6/1899) who left the Cape Province during the Great Trek in 1838. He and his wife Anna Susanna du Toit (14/11/1840 – 20/9/1921) settled here in 1861.

Daniel and Anna had 5 sons and 4 daughters, all born on the farm. Among their children, the eldest son, Sarel Francois Oosthuizen (22/3/1862 – 14/8/1900) was the well-known Boer General who fought in both the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-1881) and the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). These wars are now referred to as the First and Second South African Wars. Due to his fiery red hair and ruddy complexion he was affectionately known by his burghers as “Die Rooi Bul van Krugersdorp” His youngest brother Isak Daniel Oosthuizen also fought in the Second South African War and died in battle at the age of 17.

Daniel and Anna’s youngest daughter was Elizabeth Catharina Oosthuizen (8/6/1886 – 30/11/1972) and she is the lineage by which Danielsrust has stayed in our family. She and her family were placed in the concentration camp in Krugersdorp during the Second South African War when Britain implemented their “scorched earth” policy. All the buildings on the farm were burnt down. When she was released from the concentration camp in 1901, she applied for permission to rebuild their houses and sheds. The house and sheds still stand today and Dylan van der Merwe currently lives in the original house. The house still has all the original corrugated iron on the roof, yellowwood rafters in the roof and yellowwood floors. Our sheds were originally one of the local schools in the area.

In 1904 Elizabeth Catharina Oosthuizen married Johannes Wilhelmus van der Merwe (22/5/1871 – 22/8/1931). He was a teacher who was born in Ceres, Cape Province. They had 7 children, 2 daughters and 5 sons of which one died at 2 years of age and is buried in the cemetery on the farm. While he was teaching, she ran a dairy farm and sold her milk in Krugersdorp from the Kingdon Street Dairy.

Of their 4 remaining sons, the youngest son, Sarel Francois van der Merwe (1/11/1911 – 16/4/1985) bought the remaining portion of the farm from his parents. He married Kathleen Mary Cox (16/6/12 – 21/9/2003) who was the daughter of an 1820’s Settler who ran a Trading station in Quaba in Lesotho.

They had 3 children, Johannes Pieter van der Merwe (20/6/1942 – 21/7/2015), Elizabeth van der Merwe (7/10/1944) and Susan van der Merwe (2/8/1951), Sarel van der Merwe was also a teacher and was the principal of Krugersdorp High School from 1951-1973 when he retired. He had been involved with Krugersdorp High for 41 years – 4 years as a pupil and 37 years as a staff member. Upon his retirement he farmed with a commercial beef herd.

Johannes Pieter van der Merwe married Gail Gardner (8/2/1944 – 23/6/2014) and they had 2 children, Darrell (4/9/1966) and Dalene(5/9/63). Darrell van der Merwe married Michelle Butts (15/10/1966) and their children are Dylan van der Merwe (10/1/1994) and Kerryn van der Merwe (19/10/1996). After Sarel van der Merwe passed away Pieter and Darrell continued with the commercial beef herd as well as Mutton Merino sheep for a number of years.

In 1999 when the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site was proclaimed, the farming operation changed yet again. We converted into a game farm and served as a tourist destination for game-viewing horse and quad rides for many years.

We are now still involved in the game farming side with mountain bike trails, walking trails, picnics, day functions and camping accommodation available. Please feel free to take a stroll through the cemetery. From the original settlers to current generations, the farm’s history unfolds. There are over 70 graves in the cemetery and they have all been recorded by the Genealogical Society of South Africa.

We are delighted to be able to share this with you, please respect our home and the animals that we share this pristine environment with.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens Waterfall Hike

2 October 2021

This Botanical Garden was founded in 1982, but has been a popular venue for outings since the 1800's. After our hike, #kultuurAvontuurkamp STAPGROEP will entertain all the hikers at the picnic venue. The Garden and nature reserve is home to an abundance of wildlife with about 240 bird species recorded on site. A breeding pair of Verreaux’s Eagles nest on the cliffs near the waterfall.  A surprising number of mammal species have been sighted recently, using camera trap technology.  The presence of these rather secretive animals is a sign that the ecosystem of the estate remains viable, despite being surrounded by development.

The natural vegetation of the area is a mosaic of three main vegetation types; Egoli Granite GrasslandGold Reef Mountain Bushveld and Northern Afrotemperate Forest. This variety of habitats accommodates over 600 naturally occurring plant species.

This Botanical Garden was founded in 1982, but has been a popular venue for outings since the 1800’s. The Garden has been voted the best place to get back to nature in Gauteng for several years in a row. The office building, originally a farmhouse, is where the garden management team is based.  It also houses a small herbarium and reference library which may be visited by appointment.

Guide to Hiking Boots

A good set of hiking boots is probably one of, if not THE, most important things an adventurer can own. This guide will help you pick the perfect ones. #Hiking

Hiking boots are an excellent choice for off-trail adventures and for those who prefer more supportive footwear for tricky terrain. We love hiking boots for their durability, ankle support, and because they’re more effective at keeping your feet dry.
